Lew_M_Shoulder_Impingement_in_an_X-Ray_Technician_JACA_May_2001.pdf (PDF file) This article discusses how a painful shoulder upon lifting the arm into abduction could be something other than “frozen shoulder” (Adhesive Capsulitis) and may be caused by deep shoulder muscle trigger points and humerus and clavicle fixations. The article describes some simple myofascial methods and low force adjustments to help with this situation. NOTE: It is recognized that the words “x-ray tech” were used inappropriately. The better term should be “radiographic technologist”. Mea culpa.

CONTINUING EDUCATION SEMINARS PRESENTED BY DR. MAKANI LEW, DC, DACRB
September 11, 2008. Palmer West Campus Coffee Break Seminar Series: Thoracic Spine Technique and Management: Adjusting Difficult Thoracic Areas. This 2-hour seminar session included a presentation on the diagnosis and management of thoracic related musculo-skeletal issues. There was an emphasis on how to manage difficult areas such as the thoraco-lumbar and cervico-thoracic regions as well as adjunct areas of involvement such as the scapulo-thoracic region, the ribs, the clavicle and the acromio-clavicular joint. Alternative moves for each region were demonstrated and taken from Diversified Technique, Modified Thompson and Modified Cox-Flexion Techniques.
August 13, 2009. Palmer West Campus Coffee Break Seminar Series: Favorite Adjustments: Finding the Comfortable Adjustment for the Patient & the Doctor. This 2-hour seminar session included a presentation and hands-on practice emphasizing helping practitioners discover adjustments that were the best match to the patient’s comfort and needs as well as placing the least amount of strain on the doctor. The adjustments included all the areas of the spine as well as difficult to adjust areas such as the occiput, first rib, clavicle, scapulo-thoracic junction, ribs 2-12, and the sacro-iliac joint. Specialized techniques were presented including supine thoracic adjusting and a mechanically advantageous position of the side posture pull move.
October 15, 2010 Palmer West Campus Homecoming: Extremity Adjusting with a Kinematic Approach. Dr. Lew presented a “hands-on” workshop that allowed practitioners to learn, review and practice various adjustments for the more common problems in both the upper and lower extremities. The adjustments demonstrated were geared to patient comfort and doctor safety. Emphasis was placed on a kinematic chain approach, eg. how a scapulo-thoracic fixation affects the shoulder, the elbow, the wrist and vice versa.
April 12, 2023 How PBMT (Photobiomodulation Therapy) Helps Heal and Reduce Pain.
Dr. Lew first built a strong foundation for PBMT starting with the basics such as: the science of laser, research of laser history, and how laser affects anatomy. Then Dr. Lew shared three clinical cases (TMJ pain and movement issues, wrist sprain and finger sprain) that all demonstrated improvements in patient function and discomfort with the addition of class 3b laser therapy. 1-hour online presentation through PACE certified Tools of Practice CEUs. https://www.toolsofpractice.com/
Recording of the presentation is now available: https://pacex.fclb.org/courses/how_photobiomodulation_therapy_helps_heal_and_reduce_pain_65_12112
November 17, 2024 The Power of the Thoracic Adjustment and Rib Cage Mobilization. The evidence, the analysis, and the treatment. Dr. Lew presented on the evidence and clinical cases demonstrating how treating the thoracic spine and rib cage can relieve local as well as remote issues. Part one discussed how adjusting or mobilizing the thoracic region, cervical and shoulder musculoskeletal complaints are often alleviated. Part two covered unique patient specific rib cage torsion analysis and mobilization techniques.

Description of the classes and how they are taught by Dr. Lew
The goal of a basic anatomy class is to teach the student about the physical objects and their interactions within the body. The goal of teaching diagnoses is to make a smart doctor who is able to discern between the horses and the zebras when there is a sound of hoofbeats. The goal of teaching a future chiropractor is to explain and explore the interconnectedness of how the musculoskeletal system works. Beyond the obvious of the actual physical connections, there is the complex weaving of fascia, dermo-neuro connections, mechanical imbalances, muscular activation, mental perception, and much more. A great chiropractor finds the mechanical issue and renders it right, but also supports the patient to feel good and move better by empowering them with supportive strengthening and coordination exercises, stretches, and a healthy mindset.
